An Overview of B Vitamins
B vitamins are a complex of eight different vitamins, often thought of as energy vitamins. They are essential for the proper performance of bodily functions and can be extremely helpful in your weight loss efforts. Each one of the B-complex vitamins plays a different role in the body. Check out this overview for a basic description of each:
B1, or Thiamine
Vitamin B1 is a fundamental element in maintaining metabolic health and proper neurological functions. A B1 deficiency can cause anemia, weakness, muscular atrophy, and even paralysis, but deficiency is rare.
B2, or Riboflavin
B2 is also helpful in metabolism, as it help breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. B2 deficiencies can lead to a host of skin problems and anemia.
B3, or Niacin
B3 contributes to skin health, nerve and gastrointestinal functions, and of course, metabolism. B3 deficiencies can lead to a disease called pellagra, which causes intestinal upsets, dementia, and ultimately death.
B6, or Pyridoxine
B6 contributes to blood building for red blood cells and the metabolism of amino acids. A deficiency in B6, which is rare, can cause insomnia, skin disorders, irritation of tissues in and around the mouth, and neuropathy.
B9, or Folic acid
B9 along with B12 helps with building healthy blood and DNA cells. With the addition of vitamin C, it helps with hemoglobin and metabolism. Folic acid is essential during pregnancy. A deficiency can cause mouth irritation, anemia, and growth delays in children.
B12, or Methylcobalamin
B12, along with other B vitamins, is often used to supplement weight loss programs. Vitamin B12 aids metabolism and is essential for the rebuilding and reproduction of all of the body cells. Deficiency leads to anemia, brain damage, and oral irritation.
Biotin and Pantothenic Acid
While they have no number designation, biotin and pantothenic acid are the final of the B-complex. They both help in metabolism and synthesis of certain enzymes. Deficiency leads to skin problems.
